Hello and HAPPY FRIDAY! I apologize for ever writing those words on this blog before, because before now I had no idea how exciting Fridays really were. Actually, that’s not true, when I was living in Greenville I looked forward to Friday with all of my being. I couldn’t wait to peace out of that cat infested place and go back to Raleigh for the weekend. Anyway, tangent.
So I have another question for you guys today! Ya’ll were awesome to help me come up with some great ways to figure out what to do about running in the dark so I know you all can help me solve this makeup dilemma as well.
So for the past few years I have been using Bare Minerals along with a few Benefit products for my daily makeup routine. I like Bare Minerals a lot because it isn’t heavy or sticky and I think it looks pretty natural. I mainly like Benefit for their cute packaging… What can I say, I’m a marketer’s dream. So, I like these products a lot, but the problem is: They’re expensive.
I’ve got myself on a tight budget here because I really need to be able to save at least a little bit of money from my paycheck and also I really want to be able to join a gym. So I’m looking to make cuts wherever I can – don’t worry I’ve already had a serious talk with myself about not getting within 500 feet of a J.Crew store or catalog. Anyway, I am out of some of my makeup staples and need to buy more, but I can’t afford this expensive stuff anymore.
So here’s what I need to know from you: What are your favorite drugstore make up items? Specifically (1) powder/foundation, (2) moisturizer, and (3) mascara. Let me know which ones to try, which ones to avoid, everything! I know you guys are going to be lifesavers so thanks in advance. :)
I hope you have a great weekend! Apartment pictures up here on Monday, pinky promise!
I have used the Neutrogena mineral foundation with good results. Neutrogena also makes good moisturizer, as does Purpose. The BBs by Loreal and Maybelline are both good.
For moisturizer I love good old coconut oil. It’s seriously made my face softer than any drugstore moisturizer I’ve ever used.

drugstore makeup is the best! moisturizer = $1 travel size Pond’s in the pink tub from Target. lasts me about 3 months, smells great, and…it’s $1. colossal mascara by Maybelline (yellow tube) – lifelong staple.
Have you tried Trader Joe’s moisturizer? It is awesome, smells good, and is very light feeling on your face. The bottle is around $3.99 I believe- it lasts a long time!
I use Elf, found at Target. Everything is under $5 and it works great! I love their translucent powder which I use to set their tinted moisturizer. I also use their eyeliner and mascara. I haven’t found anything from Elf that I don’t like. It goes on easy, lasts me all day, it’s not oily or heavy, and it doesn’t irritate my skin! Win!
Good luck on your quest!

I love L’oreal Voluminous Million Lashes. It’s one of the better drugstore mascaras that I’ve used. Although this isn’t a drugstore moisturizer, I think Mario Badescu Kera Moisturizer from Nordstrom is amazing. It’s $20 but it lasts a long time since you only use a pea size amount. I’ve been working on the same bottle for about 8-9 months and have only used 2/3.
One of my FAVORITE subjects. I love Rimmel Matte Powder- AMAZING Finishing power not heavy at all. I use Maybelline Falsies Mascara, Maybelline eye color tattoo (EQUAL to Benefit- eye shadow pots.) NYX has great eye primer, and ELF Studio has fantastic blush.

(1) powder/foundation- about six months ago I switched from BareMinerals to Revlon Color Stay Whipped foundation. I LOVE it! I never thought I’d leave powder foundation, but this stuff is pretty awesome. I use a Real Techniques Expert facebrush and buff this stuff in. It stays on all day, unlike my bareminerals. I think this looks natural and not cakey at all. I want people to think my skin looks nice, not my makeup :)
(2) moisturizer-I have drier, sensitive skin and Cetaphil’s hydration cream is awesome.
(3) mascara- I’m not sure what kind of look you are going for, but I like to lengthen and define. I hate clumps. L’Oreal telescopic is my favorite by far!
I worked at Sephora for two holidays and was spoiled by the gratis and 20% off. About 6 months ago my stash ran out and I had to make the transition to more affordable makeup. Makeupalley is a great place to read reviews! You can filter reviews to find people with similar coloring/skin concerns. Also try googling drugstore dupes for your favorite products. Let us know what you choose :)
Ulta brand mineral make-up! They almost always have coupons out, and their version of Bare Minerals is almost exactly the same, but half the price! :)

I will second what Addie says – Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express mascara is a personal favorite! First learned about it on a tv show where they rated the top drug store makeup items/ told you which makeup products are worth paying the big bucks for vs. going drug store cuz it all da same gurl :) Can’t beat 5.99 – Link to see a pic: http://www.allure.com/beauty-products/makeup/2010/maybelline-colossal-volum-express-mascara
Actually, I’m also a fan of Maybelline’s foundation – I use their “Instant Anti-Age THE ERASER – perfect & cover foundation” – isn’t too heavy and has a silky finish, and features one of those spongy tops where you turn the bottom to click the makeup up into the sponge and brush it on as you need it. Fun times, toy + makeup all in one.
But I’ll end this long-winded recommendation by stating I think such a beauty with great skin like yours could use BonneBell, Wet n’ Wild or LA Looks and still turn heads!! :)
I love Neutrogena powder and Cetaphil SPF 50 moisturizer! They are amazing and I have expensive taste in makeup too. ;)
